Wearable Artists
1. Dread lock Corset by Tealia Scott of Kamikaze Couture
2. Interactive Empress by Vanna Nhoung
3. Speed Hump by Marianne McKeon
4. Mangrove by Helen Sattler
Tealia Scott and the Dread lock Corset
Tealia has studied at University of NSW, East Sydney College, Ultimo Trade School, and FBI Fashion College and completed a David Jones Traineeship. She has worked as a Theatre Dresser for the National Theatre in London, The Sydney Opera House and numerous amateur theatres.
As a Wearable Artist, she is renown for use and re-use of unconventional materials in costume making, infamous for The Goon Suit, The Shade Cloth Collection, The Burning Paper Ball Gown and The Dread lock Corset. Her artworks have been displayed in The National Gallery of Australia, The Art Gallery of NSW and The Powerhouse Museum.
As the Head Costumier of Kamikaze Couture, Tealia is an extremely versatile Costume Maker. The Dread lock Corset is constructed entirely of human dread having the illusion of feather or animal skins. Adapting a needle lace technique from the 17th Century Venetian Lace makers, the couture crew have manipulated, sculptured and stitched human dread locks hair to make a freely formed three dimensional wearable art piece.
Vanna Nhoung and the Interactive Empress
Vanna graduated from her studies at the White House School of Design, Melbourne School of Fashion and the Fashion Design Studio at Ultimo in 2006 to start her own business after boutique owners showed interest in her work after the graduation fashion show.
The female form and the power it could posess in a fantasy realm that transcends gender biases and prejudices inspire her piece Intergalactic Empress.
To Vanna it represents strength and femininity. Made of silk and snake skin, the texture of the dress was constructed using hundreds of individual strips. Vanna is currently working on a new commercial range and has previously showcased her work in the 08 Transeasonal Rosemount Australian Fashion week.
Marianne McKeon and Speed Hump
Marianne has a B.A. in Visual Arts and an MA in Costume Design and has worked extensively for over 10 years in the film and TV industry. Star Wars II, Garage Days and Looking for Ali Brandi are just a few of the productions that have been rewarded with Marianne’s creative talents.
Marianne has also taken her talent to theatre, short film, and costume designer on short films. The inspiration for her garment comes from the numerous roadwork delays in her travels throughout New Zealand. The roadwork’s bizarre bra features a led light system, illuminating the anatomy of the female body.
As well as exhibiting her work in various exhibitions, Marianne also teaches Design and Technology in a Sydney High School.
Helen Sattler and Mangrove
Helen is a self-taught designer, sewing since she was 8. With a vivid imagination and a passion to create dreams into reality, Helen gives her creative Midas touch to anything she touches. Helen career started off in the film and TV Industry with her own business Pluto Productions, which lead to performing, public speaking and her creating her own fashion label Boutio Studio.
The entangled form of a mangrove tree on Sydney’s harbor foreshores inspired the Mangrove. It is dyed with natural dyes, has freeform machine stitching overlays and is hand coloured with watercolours. Along with her Mangrove, Helen will be showcasing a garment created for Victoria Beckem out of Who Weekly magazines. Look out the super star
